HDR | Rice Daubney releases concept design for Novartis’ Australian HQ in Sydney

Key stakeholders have now been presented with concept designs for the new Australian Headquarters of pharmaceutical company Novartis in Sydney, as drawn up by HDR | Rice Daubney. Should the scheme be realised, it will be the first time that the three companies under the Novartis umbrella (Alcon, Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Sandoz) will work together in a single building.

The design has been devised to effectively symbolise the two pinnacles of the Novartis brand: a transparent glass box to signify a grounding in fact-based science; and a number of fluid timber elements to reference the company’s mission of Caring and Curing. This blend of sleek glass volumes and warm wooden structures stretches across six storeys and 107,000 sq ft of space.

Jason Smith, Country Head & Managing Director of Novartis Pharmaceuticals explains: “To support our position as a leading healthcare company in Australia, we need to create an environment that facilitates collaboration, inspires productivity and performance, and allows us to connect with the external world - with our customers and industry stakeholders. The design of our new building will help us achieve this.”

As Smith suggests, the new headquarters has been designed to foster collaboration between the three Novartis companies and across multiple departments. A central space at the core of the building provides a plethora of areas for social interaction whilst connecting the ground floor lobby, café, and the Novartis museum to the working levels, upper meeting rooms, and the open-air roof garden.

Sustainability plays a key role in the design, with the concept looking to achieve a 5 Star Green Star Rating from the Green Building Council of Australia and a 5 Star Energy Rating from the National Australian Building Environment Rating System. Ganellen is the Design & Construction Contractor for the project, and Marprop is the Development Manager.

In July 2014, WAN published details of the Novartis Office Building and Visitor Reception in East Hanover, New Jersey by Weiss/Manfredi.
