NORD Architects-designed urban hospice now under construction in Copenhagen

“By considering the needs of the users, client, and neighbours, Urban Hospice sets a new standard on how you can build innovative healthcare projects in urban contexts,” explains Morten Rask Gregersen, Partner at NORD Architects Copenhagen.

The firm is currently watching its 2,233 sq m Urban Hospice scheme take shape in Copenhagen’s Frederiksberg district. This 16-bed facility has been slotted into a challenging built-up site to replace an existing hospice and provide a ‘warm and protecting’ healthcare centre for the deaconess community.

NORD Architects has designed the hospice with the approach that the right architecture can have a positive effect on palliative patients. This concept has been successfully brought to the fore by Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, an international organisation that highlights architecture’s role in the healthcare arena.

Working with Rambøll Copenhagen and MASU Planning, the architecture team has blended rectilinear and curved structures befitting the needs of the hospice and creating a sheltered courtyard at the heart of the development.

The organisation and overarching form of the building are a response to the challenging site conditions, including the proximity to neighbouring structures. Completion is expected by the end of 2015.
