2.3 million sq ft residential scheme to reinvigorate local PATH stop in Jersey City

Journal Squared is a 2.3million sq ft residential scheme in Jersey City designed by Hollwich Kushner (HWKN) and Handel Architects. Due to be constructed in three phases, the residential-led development is part of a wider scheme which looks to redevelop Journal Square. The project broke ground in early 2014 and completion of phase I is estimated in mid-2016.

The unanimously approved Journal Squared complex will create 1,840 residential units, anchored to the street with a mixed-use base comprising retail outlets, restaurants, lobbies, and parking amenities. The tallest of the three towers in the development will rise to 70 storeys and will, according to the architects, be the highest residential structure in New Jersey.

One of the key constituents of the design is the transformation of the back entrance to the Journal Square PATH stop (the Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation’s rapid rail transit system). The current site is dominated by station loading, parking spaces, and asphalt, which HWKN and Handel Architects will transform into a welcoming public arena with trees and community events such as a farmer’s market and evening film showings.

Bruce Mau Design has generated a visual identity for the Journal Squared development, with wayfinding, signage, and environmental graphics across the site. It is hoped that this scheme will provide a prototype for future transit-based developments both in the local area and beyond.
