Temporary installation for London Design Festival to be incorporated into ME Dubai

Renderings have been released of the ‘pivotal’ installation for this year’s London Design Festival. Designed by Zaha Hadid and entitled ‘Crest’, the artistic work comprises a swathe of pre-stressed aluminium which will be assembled in the John Madejski garden at the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) before being bent into shape in situ.

Hadid commented: “‘Crest’ animates and engages with the V&A’s courtyard and we’re looking forward to seeing the installation inhabited and enjoyed by visitors.  Precision engineered as a pre-stressed aluminum shell of minimum thickness, ‘Crest’ is designed as a demountable sculpture to be installed at the ME Hotel, Dubai; continuing to explore the relationships between fluid and Cartesian, solid and void, surface and structure inherent within the hotel’s design.

We envisaged a piece that would emerge from the fountain at the centre of pool. The metallic surface will reflect the sky on one side and the rippling water on the underside.” The installation has been commissioned by ME by Meliá, a lifestyle brand with design-led hotels in prominent locations such as London, Ibiza and Majorca. ME Dubai, the first hotel to be entirely designed by Hadid, is due to open in spring 2016.

Crest will rise in a smooth metallic arc over the pool within the V&A’s popular courtyard, set to a historic backdrop. The museum - a treasured favourite for many Londoners - is free to the public and was established at its current site in 1857. The institution is currently undergoing an expansion project to a design by AL_A which will see underground exhibition spaces installed beneath an unused courtyard on Exhibition Road.
