COOKFOX Architects for duo of Pacific Park Brooklyn residential towers following rebrand of Atlantic Yards scheme

Greenland Forest City Partners - the joint venture of Forest City Ratner Companies and Greenland USA (a subsidiary of the Shanghai-based Greenland Group Co.) - has announced that the Atlantic Yards scheme in New York will now by developed under a new name: Pacific Park Brooklyn.

In addition to this revelation, Greenland Forest City Partners also announced the appointment of COOKFOX Architects to design two new residential buildings as part of the development, and Thomas Balsley Associates to generate plans for a public park, known as Pacific Park.

The first tower, 535 Carlton Avenue, will be comprised of 300 residential units. 100% of this tower will be affordable rental space, marketed at low, moderate and middle income New York residents. COOKFOX is also working on the design of a 275-unit condominium building called 550 Vanderbilt Avenue. Construction of the affordable tower is due to commence in December 2014 with the condominium to follow shortly after.

Richard Cook, Founder and Partner at COOKFOX, said: “We believe very deeply that our city needs to plan and build for a diverse, healthy, resilient, and sustainably oriented urban density - and some of the most rewarding and profoundly important work for our studio has been built in rapidly changing Brooklyn.

“After walking the site, from the civic anchor of Barclays Center to the vibrant neighborhood corner of Dean and Vanderbilt, the two buildings at 535 Carlton and 550 Vanderbilt, in our opinion, are the most important sites. These buildings must embrace the responsibility of making the transition in scale from the existing, tree canopied streets of the neighborhood, to the urban bookends that bracket the new, public Pacific Park.”

Pacific Park, designed by Thomas Balsley Associates, will stretch over an 8 acre plot at the heart of the development. The space will be transformed in phases through temporary and permanent installations gradually drawing attention to the new parkland.

Thomas Balsley, Founder and Design Principal of Thomas Balsley Associates, said: “This is an extraordinary opportunity to create an open green space at the center of five of Brooklyn’s most vibrant and dynamic neighborhoods. Pacific Park will transform a railyard - a gap in the urban fabric - into a destination for all New Yorkers.”
