New suspension bridge planned for Rome

Italian design studio OFFICINALEONARDO has shared its latest concept design with WAN: The French Bridge. This looping structure is designed to span a built-up area in Rome, connecting two areas of the city close to Corso di Francia Hill: Fleming and Vigna Clara.

Renderings show the French Bridge sailing over a busy road and a multitude of existing buildings in a dense urban area of the city.

Multiple modes of transportation will be accommodated on the sculptural new bridge, with space for both pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge has been conceptualised ‘to be permeable and transparent to the urban environment’ with a ‘curvilinear body…open to light penetration’.

OFFICINALEONARDO has incorporated the structural elements of the design into its aesthetic appeal, with looping structural elements and carefully angled suspension rods creating a dynamic shape on the skyline.

The team states that its design seems ‘to defy the laws of physics, statics and construction techniques [through] a language of lightness, transparency and technology’.

Sustainability has played a key role in the design with the team looking to use 80% recycled steel in construction.
