Studio Gang and MAD Architects confirmed for Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

The design team has been announced for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art (LMNA). Due to be constructed in Chicago, the LMNA is the brainchild of film director George Lucas who will be opening the museum with his own personal collection. The design for the museum is due to be released in late 2014.

Lucas has now revealed that MAD Architects will be acting as Principal Designer for the LMNA site with Studio Gang appointed to generate the landscape design and a bridge to connect the LMNA to Northerly Island. Local practice VOA Associates will serve as Executive Architect.

“We are bringing together some of the top architects in the world to ensure that our museum experience begins long before a visitor ever enters the building,” explains Lucas. “I am thrilled with the architectural team’s vision for the building and the surrounding green space.”

Once complete, the museum will provide Chicago with a public space in which to learn about narrative art and the evolution of the moving image. Through Lucas’ personal collection - due to be expanded over time - visitors will experience a century-and-a-half of narrative art, through illustration to cinema.

Ma Yansong, Founder of MAD Architects commented: “It is a gift to be able to design the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in a city so rich with architectural history. I am humbled and honoured to be given this opportunity to create a timeless design that moves and inspires people just like Mr. Lucas’ collection.”

This sentiment was echoed by Jeanne Gang, Founder of Studio Gang, who said: “We are excited to build upon our current work and collaborate to create a seamless transition between the Museum Campus and Northerly Island. In keeping with the Northerly Island ethos, our design goal will be to create a combined ecological and urban habitat.” Studio Gang has spent the past four years transforming Northerly Island from an airport runway to an oasis of greenery.

The Studio Gang project team includes SCAPE Landscape Architecture (Landscape Architecture & Design), Thornton Tomasetti (Structural Engineering), Peter Heppel Associates(Structural Engineering), dbHMS (MEP/Environmental Engineering), and David Mason & Associates (Civil Engineering).
