Shigeru Ban Architects to design passenger terminal for Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport

Shigeru Ban Architects has been selected to design a passenger terminal for Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport. The practice confirmed the news on its website but is yet to give full details of the design, aside from two renderings which show a green barrel roof and an interior that is characteristically ‘Ban’, with a wooden latticework creating intimate and tactile spaces.

An announcement on the Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport also lists Japanese airport consultants BANJAC as design team members and refers to the winning collaboration as ‘the cream of the crop’. The concept references Japanese tea plantations (see here for further details in PDF format) and comprises a two-storey volume with leafy indoor foliage and large amounts of natural light.
