Magical wishing stones and forest fairies created in Canadian park by Moment Factory

Experience designers Moment Factory have completed a transformational project at Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook in Canada. The setting is a 164ft-deep gorge surrounded by wooded campgrounds, nature trails and mountain biking paths, attracting 100,000 visitors each year. The park is also home to the longest suspension bridge in North America.

Moment Factory were approached to create an evening experience that would increase visitor numbers after dark; the result is Foresta Lumina, an illuminated night trail through the forest.

Taking inspiration from characters found in local and international folk tales, the team at Moment Factory have devised an interactive experience that appeals to all ages. The project needed to be robust enough to last summer after summer and the natural setting allowed the team to easily conceal the technical apparatus, making the experience even more immersive.

Visitors are invited to follow a 2km ‘garden of wishes’ trail, picking up a magical stone at the beginning of the track and throwing it into the waters of the ‘enchanted shore’ whilst making a wish. There are also small lighting units that suggest the presence of fairies and perforated panels inscribed with descriptions of the folk tale characters that lead visitors on their journey through the woods.

Moment Factory explains: “Most of today’s multimedia experiences are found in urban settings. In this case, Moment Factory faced the challenge of designing and building one in a natural setting. The team travelled to the site and soaked up the surroundings. The forest and its spaces, topography, detours and mysteries became the canvas for the experience.”
