Tower Hamlets Council gives green light to eastern continuation of Canary Wharf district 

Tower Hamlets Council has granted planning approval for a 6.5 million sq ft mixed-use development at Wood Wharf, London by Canary Wharf Group (CWG). This green light means CWG can begin work on the first phase of the development in the fourth quarter of 2014 in order to ensure that this initial stage is completed in time for the arrival of Crossrail in 2018.

Plans for the eastern continuation of the Canary Wharf district were drawn up by Allies & Morrison with three residential buildings by Herzog & de Meuron and Stanton Williams incorporated into the concept. Allies & Morrison were also responsible for designing two office buildings totalling over 216,000 sq ft with Hilson Moran providing MEP, sustainability and vertical transportation. 

Speaking on the announcement, Sir George Iacobescu, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Canary Wharf Group, said: “This major eastern development of Canary Wharf will reinforce the district as one of London’s most vibrant and dynamic mixed-use commercial and residential districts.

“It will combine new high quality offices aimed at the fast emerging TMT (Technology, Media and Telecommunications) sector; a wide variety of high street shops and restaurants, and a range of new housing opportunities designed around generous newly created public spaces.”

The approved Wood Wharf scheme will see 30 new buildings constructed as part of the Canary Wharf development to create a fully mixed-use district catering to local residents and businesses. All elements of the design are connected by approximately 9 acres of public spaces, including a kilometre of dock-edge walkways.

3,100 new residential units are incorporated into the plan, 884 of which will be constructed within Phase I. These residences range from park-side townhouses to high-rises and social housing. 2.6 million sq ft of commercial offices will also be developed alongside a 420-place primary school, an NHS medical centre, a community centre, a hotel, and 100+ high street shops.
