Construction completes on Porter School of Environmental Sciences in Tel Aviv

A collaboration of Geotectura, Axelrod-Grobman Architects and Chen Architects has seen its design for the new Porter School of Environmental Sciences (PSES) Building come to life in Tel Aviv. The first green building to be completed on the Tel Aviv University Campus, this new education facility has been designed by an expert team to deliver Israel’s first LEED Platinum building.

Students using the PSES Building will be invited to analyse how the building works in order to further inform their studies. The public will also be invited to access the building and use it as a resource tool. The operation of the environmental systems will be available to visitors and students, enabling them to assess the solar and thermal energy-based air conditioning, bioclimatic technologies, and measurement & control systems.

As users make their way from the train station to the PSES Building, a Science Promenade with environmental displays will provide information as a prelude to their visit. The completed PSES Building includes classrooms, offices, an atrium with exhibition space, a green roof, a garden with biological wetlands, a cafeteria, and an auditorium.

The leading architectural team encompassed three leading firms, specialising in various aspects of green building: Axelrod Grobman Architects (Irit Axelrod & Yasha Grobman), Geotectura (Dr. Joseph Cory) and Chen Architects (Nili & Nir Chen).

They were joined by several other project partners: Braudo-Maoz Landscape Architecture Ltd., Assa Aharoni Consulting Engineering Ltd., Avivi Axelrod Engineers Ltd. and the Baran Engineering Group, which managed the construction. Shitufit Construction Company LTD was responsible for the construction and the project was made possible by a donation from Dame Shirley Porter.

The team was further assisted by a number of consultants and experts, both Israeli and foreign, including Guy Battle - a UK construction & environmental engineer, founder of dcarbon8 Ltd. and lead partner at Deloitte UK, who specialises in integrated planning of low energy, environmental buildings.
