UTS prepares to welcome first students into new Faculty of Engineering & IT building

The first students are due to populate the new Faculty of Engineering and IT (FEIT) building at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) in the coming weeks. Designed by Denton Corker Marshall in a collaborative process with the UTS and contractor Lend Lease, the FEIT building is one of three major new additions in the university's billion-dollar City Campus Master Plan.

Professor Ross Milbourne, UTS Vice Chancellor, explains: “The building’s design has a student-centred strategy at its core, which aims to support graduate outcomes closely linked to both future trends and industry needs. One of the design priorities was to create a more integrated and collaborative learning space with facilities that are second to none in terms of technology and innovation.”

To aid this collaborative process across the school, Denton Corker Marshall has inserted a slim atrium - referred to by the design team as a ‘crevasse’ - which links the teaching, social and learning areas in a top-lit volume. The interior spaces have a raw and industrial feel, with metal and glass playing key roles in the finish.

The FEIT building has been designed as a ‘living lab’, encouraging the UTS students to study the sustainability credentials of the design and monitor how it performs over the years. As such, data from the key sustainability elements - solar panels, wind turbines and water recycling - will be displayed on screens throughout the school building and used within lessons and for research purposes.

Externally the form is wrapped in a perforated aluminium shell, differentiating the FEIT building from its neighbours on the edge of the Sydney CBD. The intriguing façade to this 44,000 sq ft building is decorated with a pattern derived from a binary code from ‘University of Technology Sydney Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology'.
