HOK and Arup release renderings of road bridge to cross Thames at Gallions Reach

HOK and Arup have released renderings of a new road bridge that would cross the River Thames between Beckton and Thamesmead at Gallions Reach. Named ‘Bridge East London’, the scheme has been devised to combat the shortage of road crossings in the eastern section of the Thames in order to harness the potential of east London. Almost half the population of London lives to the east of Tower Bridge, served by only two fixed road river crossings.

Plans by HOK and Arup incorporate cycle paths and enable new bus routes to cross the river, whilst enabling ships to path beneath the form. The project has been met with mixed reviews from the public, with some suggesting better public transport links - such as a cross-river DLR in the same spot - would be preferable to increased traffic in the area and others praising the focus on enhanced cycle routes.

The Bridge East London campaign was launched by London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) whose Chief Executive Colin Stanbridge heralded the new design as an opportunity to bring new jobs to the area: “Nearly half of London’s population lives east of Tower Bridge yet they are served by only two fixed road river crossings. It is an area with huge amounts of potential and while the Olympics acted as a crucible for creativity and dynamism in the area, its future growth is being held back by this gap in transport infrastructure.

“We know that the Mayor shares our enthusiasm for helping the east of the capital to maximise its exciting reinvention. The area is currently attracting the worlds brightest and best whether to the financial heartland of Canary Wharf, the Royal Docks development or the high-tech firms flocking to Silicon Roundabout in Shoreditch. New road river crossings linking east and south east London over the Thames will bring new jobs and homes to an area of the capital that has been overlooked for too long.”

The concept for a bridge to span the Thames in this area of London has been broached a number of times and met with lengthy inquiries and cancellations. More information about the current campaign can be found here
