MulvannyG2 Architecture wins unbuilt title 

The wait for the 2013 WAN AWARDS Commercial Sector Winner in the Unbuilt category is finally over. We would like to extend a huge congratulations to MulvannyG2 Architecture for their future scheme China Resources Land in Nantong. The city centre project is designed for the bustling community of Nantong just north of Shanghai and brings together a variety of uses under one immense urban commercial development.

With e-commerce becoming an increasingly popular market, architects have to address the issue of maximising commercial value to a building without compromising on those special qualities that are so important to great architecture, such as originality, form and contextualisation. The WAN AWARDS panel assembled to review this sector with anticipation, and recognised Robert Fry (Aukett Swanke) as a guest member to cast the deciding vote. The finalists for the unbuilt category vying for the title of winner were:

MulvannyG2 Architecture's China Resources Land

The winning scheme in Nantong incorporates retail, office space and entertainment facilities (including an ice skating rink and a cinema), set over narrow but lengthy 500m-long site, encompassing nearly 300,000 sq m of commercial space. It was highlighted by the jury that the scheme had taken note of the surrounding landscape well in that ‘there's an intelligent analysis of the city in the detailing’.

The design layout uses the full length of the site for the for-sale and in-use commercial spaces, maximising the street exposure and enabling the buildings to complement each other, which enhances circulation around the scheme. Robert Fry also said that ‘there is an ease of transition between inside and out’, noting that the project encompassed a ‘huge swathe of uses’ spread throughout the towers, concourse and shopping spaces.
