MET Studio to masterplan and design three galleries at Museo de Ciencias Ambientales

It has been confirmed that international experiential design practice MET Studio will create three of the six galleries for the Museo de Ciencias Ambientales (MCA) near the University of Guadalajara in Western Mexico. The team will also be responsible for masterplanning the site in a joint venture with Academy Studios. Three additional galleries will be designed by New York-based Thinc.

Located in a building designed by Snøhetta, the MCA will be a museum dedicated to environmental sciences. The scheme is the being led by conservationist Eduardo Santana-Castellón who is keen to co-create a facility with the University of Guadalajara in order to heighten awareness in the local youth population for issues of sustainability.

MET Studio Design Director Peter Karn details: “The audience for the project is very much the young people of the region who will inherit the results of today’s and tomorrow’s environmental decisions and who will be encouraged to engage with these important issues. Our design very much embraces this by incorporating a contemporary interpretation of indigenous styles and bringing a social aspect to the gallery spaces and interactives.”

MET Studio is working with the former Head of Exhibit and Innovation and Special Projects at the National History Museum in London, Bob Bloomfield OBE. The concept is to inspire young visitors to ask what lessons can be learnt from studying the past and how they can ensure a sustainable relationship between the city and the wider region given the rapidly increasing population of Guadalajara.

Alex McCuaig, MET Studio Chairman, commented: “We are delighted with this appointment and with the opportunity to make a contribution to a world-class centre for the furtherment of environmental sciences. We look forward to working both with our client and with such a great international architectural and design team on this ground-breaking project.”
