Modest cabin for wine-grower tucked away in the rolling hills of Mondragon

Design studio h2o architectes has shared its latest project in Mondragon with WAN. This modest 58 sq m pavilion was designed for a wine-grower in southeast France and combines a welcoming visitor area with facilities to taste local produce, an office and administration area, and washrooms for employees.

Completed in December 2013, the pavilion uses wood cultivated from the nearby woodland region of Savoie with a timber frame and wood cladding throughout. It takes a star-plan with three prongs for each of the required activities, all bathed in natural light which reflects off the pure white interiors.

La Cabotte is nestled into a hillside surrounded by verdant foliage, creating ‘palpable tension between the volumes and the landscape’. The pavilion rests on uneven ground so h2o architectes has added ‘feet’ to two of the three volumes to even out the slope.

Due to its elevated location, the €110,000 cabin is privy to undulating views in many directions. As such, the design team has integrated multiple large window panes which frame the dramatic views and highlight certain elements, including the vineyards and Mont Ventoux.
