KREOD to construct new pavilion 20 times larger than original for Rio Olympic Games

KREOD Architecture has released a series of images of its latest ambitious venture, destined for construction in Rio de Janeiro in time for the 2016 Olympic Games. The International Trade Pavilion will be twenty times larger than the KREOD-designed pavilion for the London 2012 Olympic Games. This 2012 pavilion was shortlisted for the 2013 WAN Façade of the Year Award.

Renderings depict a sculptural architectural gesture on the Rio waterfront, its swooping form lightly touching the ground at three points. KREOD explains that the 1,200 sq m structure will provide ‘tangible and exciting opportunities’ for entrepreneurs from Brazil, China and the UK to showcase their products and ideas, and connect with like-minded businesspeople.

Located in Barra da Tijuca, the KREOD International Trade Pavilion will be a stone’s throw from the official stadium venue for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The graceful structure will be used to host a series of cross-sector business events for international professionals with the aim of accelerating economic growth throughout participating countries.

KREOD Architecture worked with engineers Ramboll, and suppliers Blue Stone Glass and Kebony. The original KREOD pavilion for the London 2012 Olympic Games incorporated Kebony (a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood and preservative treated timber) to great effect and the architects plan to use this eco-friendly material once again in the realisation of their latest scheme.

Building work is due to start on site in January 2016 with a construction period of 6 months.
