Skidmore, Owings & Merrill releases details of one of three stations for All Aboard Florida

Renderings were released this week for a multimodal transport hub in Miami designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). The hub is part of a three-pronged project by the firm for All Aboard Florida, an intercity passenger rail project developed by Florida East Coast Industries. The scheme also includes two additional passenger stations in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach although designs for these two stations are yet to be revealed.

SOM’s design for the multimodal hub in Miami raises the railway line 50ft into the air in order to create a blend of retail and F&B outlets at ground level, rendering the station complex a destination in its own right. This station-as-destination approach will also be carried through to SOM’s projects in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

The All Aboard Florida scheme looks to connect South Florida to Orlando through the creation of new railway lines and maximisation of existing infrastructure. The one scheme of its kind in development at this present time, All Aboard Florida incorporates 235 miles of rail lines and is privately owned, operated and financed.

President and Chief Development Office of All Aboard Florida Michael Reininger comments: “An estimated 12 million travellers will benefit from the Miami station. All Aboard Florida provides a fast and convenient transit alternative for this growing demand and need, while integrating transportation infrastructure with mixed use development to serve as a catalyst for transformation and economic vitality in a city that is quickly becoming a model for urban living today.”

Estimates suggest that in excess of three million car journeys per annum will be eliminated by the All Aboard Florida Miami station with the wider development thought to inject $6bn+ into the state’s economy over an 8-year period.
