86-suite hotel and resort completed by Atkins in the Al Hajar Mountains of Oman

WAN rarely receives project submissions from Oman so we were delighted when Atkins sent us details of their latest boutique hotel this morning. The Alila Jabal Akhdar in the Al Hajar Mountains is a serene 86-suite hotel and resort overlooking a nearby gorge and provides 5-star accommodation 2,000m above sea level.

It takes approximately 2 and a half hours to reach the Alila Jabal Akhdar by road and the accessibility issues were a defining factor in Atkins’ design. The use of local products and materials was maximised throughout, with traditional Omani construction methods blended with locally-inspired contemporary architecture to achieve the final result.

Marco Malpiedi, Managing Director of Atkins in Oman, said: “The stunning natural surroundings for this project were a fantastic inspiration for our design team, but it was also extremely important to ensure the development complements and sits in harmony with the local environment. A great deal of work went into finding the optimum orientation to make the most of the site’s location so it offers uninterrupted views to the canyons below.”

Atkins provided architectural, geological and multidisciplinary engineering design services for Alila Jabal Akhdar, working with Omran, a company set up by the Government of Oman to oversee assets and investments in the tourism sector. Visitors to the chic boutique hotel will be greeted with a wide range of facilities, including outdoor and indoor pools, a gym, spa, and restaurant and lounge areas.

Malpiedi continues: “Alila Jabal Akhdar is significant because not only is it a fantastic addition to Oman’s selection of high end hotels, but it will also drive further investment to support sustainable, well-planned tourism in the area. This in turn will further stimulate local businesses and employment opportunities. We’re delighted to have been involved in the project’s success and it’s another impressive entry into our portfolio of completed projects in Oman and the Middle East.”
