World's largest independent library set for major revamp

Haworth Tompkins architects plans to redevelop and expand the London Library have been approved. The Grade II listed London Library is the largest independent library in the world housing one million books. With the acquisition of over 8,000 volumes a year, the library requires half a mile of additional shelving every three years. Aims of the project will be to provide the library with improved storage, enhanced reader support, staff and member facilities. A new circulation layout will make user navigation easier. The original book stacks will be maintained and the façade of Duchess House will be redesigned. The £25m project is set to commence in autumn 2006
