Legacy comes first for Populous in design of 2014 Incheon Asian Games Main Stadium

The official end of construction at the Populous-designed Main Stadium for the 2014 Incheon Asian Games has been marked with a celebration in the South Korean city. The multipurpose stadium has been designed to hold 60,000 spectators during the Games this September, with the intention to reduce this number by half following the culmination of the event.

When approaching the design process, Populous - who worked with local practice Heerim Architects and Planners - specifically created a 30,000-seat stadium with the ability to host an additional 30,000 spectators for a set period of time. In effect, the design team conceptualised a legacy stadium before designing a venue for the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

As Senior Principal at Populous Andrew James notes: “If the social legacy is achieved in the way it was originally planned, I think the world will sit up and notice that Korea is leading the way in delivering a sports project with a real defined legacy.”

The resulting design is comprised of a curvilinear structure surrounded by refined landscaping. During the Games, the Eastern stand will form a traditional stadium hill and plazas to the north and south will enable atmospheric clusters for spectator viewing. Following the close of the Games, the Eastern stand will replaced with a community park. This approach provided substantial savings in operational and maintenance costs.
