Construction commences on Cité Musicale at Ile Seguin, Paris by Shigeru Ban Architects Europe & Jean de Gastines Architectes

One of the flagship projects at Ile Seguin, Paris has begun on site. Cité Musicale is an international music hub designed by Shigeru Ban Architects with Jean de Gastines Architectes, combining teaching facilities for classical music with commercial areas and business lounges targeted at music-orientated affairs.

Mott MacDonald acted as lenders’ technical advisor on the project on behalf of Tempo Ile Seguin. Erwann Pilé, Mott MacDonald’s Project Director commented: “The Ile Seguin development, of which Cité Musicale is a key aspect, will make a significant contribution to the regeneration of south west Paris, generating jobs and attracting international visitors to the area.”

The Cité Musicale scheme includes a 6,000-seat concert hall and 1,150-seat auditorium alongside teaching rooms, rehearsal spaces, recording studios, backstage dressing rooms and administration facilities. The project is part of a much wider redevelopment project which will transform the former Renault factory in the middle of the River Seine into an arts and entertainment district, complete with modern arts centre, cinemas and public gardens.

Erwann continues: “One of the most remarkable features of this project is the nest-shaped auditorium, which will be wrapped in a woven wood framework and laid over a reflecting pool, creating a mirrored effect. The structure will also feature a 50m-high mobile steel sail which will support more than 1,000 sq m of photovoltaic panels, programmed to follow the course of the sun.”
