World’s tallest observation wheel opens in Las Vegas, designed by Hettema Group

On 31 March, throngs of people lined up on the Las Vegas Strip to be the first to experience the High Roller, the world’s tallest observation wheel and the Strip’s newest attraction. At 550ft high, the High Roller is 100ft taller than the London Eye and features 28 spherical glass enclosed cabins of Italian design, each with the capacity to hold 40 passengers.

More than a fanciful attraction, the High Roller is the centerpiece of a new urban entertainment district called The LINQ that aspires to create a genuine sense of urbanity in a city that was built on gambling and still caters mostly to tourists.

Designed by Hettema Group, the mega wheel is a mini-Vegas showroom, complete with music theatrical lighting and even the opportunity to take part in a game of chance. In addition to offering the best views of the Vegas strip and its surroundings, the experience includes a dynamic video and music show that fades as the wheel ascends to the top. More than 2,000 programmable lights adorn the wheel making it visible from anywhere in the Las Vegas valley.

“The opportunity to design a new icon for the Las Vegas skyline has been both challenging and exciting. Our primary goal was to simultaneously create a singularly beautiful aesthetic design for the wheel, as well as make the guest experience memorable and surprising from beginning to end,” said Phil Hettema, President and Creative Executive of The Hettema Group.

Design Architect, John Kasperowicz said: “As a long-time resident of Las Vegas, I could not be more proud of this project. This architecture team worked very closely with the engineers from Arup and to see our vision come to life in such a gorgeous way is incredibly exciting. From the entry point, through to the interior design of the cabins, each and every detail has been beautifully realized.”

The High Roller is the focal point of The LINQ, a new urban entertainment district developed by Caesars Entertainment. Situated across from Caesars Palace, adjacent to Flamingo Las Vegas and the Quad Resort and Casino and between two monorail stops, the High Roller is conveniently accessible to visitors and locals alike with good pedestrian connections and ample parking for cars.
