Introducing the Pop-Up Passive House

A new wave of passive houses that are quick to build, energy efficient and have a huge cool factor are hitting the market. The Pop-Up Passive House featured here consists of a basic kit-of-parts of insulating blocks and wooden panels that can be assembled in four short days with unskilled labor and simple household tools.

Based on a patented passive construction process developed by French design and architecture practice Multipod Studio, the house is made of lightweight, recyclable low-cost materials that have a high insulating value, requiring no additional heating in certain climates.

The first prototype of this new type of passive house has been built in the pine valleys of the South of France and more are underway. Whether this system is durable and replicable in other parts of the world remains to be seen. But the 'out-of-the-box’ thinking represented here is certainly admirable. Depending on costs and perhaps with modifications, the Pop-Up Passive House could be a good solution to the world’s housing problem.
