Eder Biesel Arkitekter AS strikes the right tone in WAN Colour in Architecture Award

Following on from the highly-charged jury session where our esteemed jury members selected the final six shortlisted projects from the roster of WAN 2013 Colour in Architecture Award entries, the panel were then faced with the challenge of selecting an overall winner. Joining us to judge this year’s submissions were: Amarjit Kalsi Senior Consultants at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners; Morgan Morrison, Partner at Hawkins\Brown; Colour Consultant Frances Tobin; and Bart Akkerhuis from Renzo Piano Building Workshop taking part from Paris.

The initial six shortlisted projects consisted of: Da Ya Kindergarten in Taiwan by J. M. Lin Architects; the Fish Market in Bergen by Eder Biesel Arkitekter AS; A Glowing Lantern for ‘Little India’ in Singapore by Robert Greg Shand Architects + URBNarc Pte Ltd; American Express Offices in Brighton, UK by EPR Architects; the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Seattle by Olson Kundig Architects; and finally the National Stadium in Warsaw by Lichtvision.

We are delighted to announce that the accolade of winner has been awarded to the Fish Market in Bergen by Eder Biesel Arkitekter AS. With a unanimous decision made almost instantly, it was clear that there was something particularly special about this project and its use of colour. Amarjit commented: “The colour and materials make this the winner for me; but as well as this, the context of the project.”

The building sits on the water’s edge in the heart of the city of Bergen, Norway. This highly popular fish market and tourist information centre uses varying tones in a considered way, with Morag Morrison praising its ‘very sophisticated use of colour’. The façade was designed to incorporate the colours of the region - dark red, brown, white and ochre - and to reflect the rhythm of the place, which it does with dramatic and pleasing effect. As Frances Tobin stated: “The Fish Market brings something to the place; it works with the place, it references the place and it adds to the area.” And all were in agreement in this score.

Bart Akkerhuis observed: “This project creates a new place in the city for people; a real urban place where people can meet, eat, drink and do their shopping. The use of colour integrates the contemporary building into the old urban fabric as if it always has been there.” Frances Tobin concluded: “It’s a lovely mix; I’d love to be there, to know what it is like.”

The overall feeling was that the intelligent use of colour alongside the clear integration with context and community made this project the WAN 2013 Colour in Architecture winner. Many congratulations to Eder Biesel Arkitekter AS: Thank you for presenting this wonderful project and providing an excellent example of how to use colour in architecture in a considerate and contextually relevant way. The modern look and feel of this building has not distracted from its historical surroundings and that has proved to make this the favourite of a very colourful bunch.

Many thanks also to all who entered the competition. It was a really diverse and interesting array of projects included this year and we would highly recommend taking five minutes to view all of the entries and take a look at the new advances and uses of colour within architecture.
