20,000 Sacramentans join focus groups and workshops to aid design of downtown Entertainment and Sports Center

Renderings have been released for the Entertainment and Sports Center for the Sacramento Kings. The glossy images show a dynamic façade that will provide a recognisable architectural gesture for downtown Sacramento with public open spaces and tree-lined pedestrian pathways. AECOM is leading the design with the project expected to break ground in summer 2014.

The design is the result of six months of face-to-face conversations with over 20,000 Sacramentans through focus groups, workshops and open houses. Kings team president Chris Granger expands: “We so appreciate the input and feedback from our community. Our city deserves a building that is iconic, that provides for world class entertainment and that will stage the greatest home court advantage in sports.”

AECOM has designed the scheme to reflect its locale in Northern California using materials such as glass, recycled aluminium and precast concrete created using sand from San Benito and rocks from Sierra limestone. The team also intend to incorporate the latest in environmental and technological innovation into the final design.

“We set our sights on a design that’s never been done before,” said Jon Niemuth, AECOM director of sports for the Americas. “Each design element shows that this arena is built for Sacramento. We’re aiming for a facility that celebrates the city, strengthens the downtown community, supports the team’s success and offers an unmatched fan experience.”
