Concept for 133,400 sq m hotel resort in Liantang inspired by Chinese Water Dragon

John Portman & Associates has released details about its latest scheme in China. The architecture and engineering firm has been active in China for over 30 years, working on high-profile projects such as the Shanghai Center and Hyatt Regency Hangzhou.

This latest scheme is a 133,400 sq m hotel resort for the Shanghai Jiuzhou Group Company which will see a 45,000 sq m hotel erected within a 6.5 million sq m conservation forest. Meandering waterways snake through the site, providing an alternative transportation network and aesthetically pleasing view.

Robert Halverson of John Portman & Associates furthers: “Architecture should connect people to places and the environment and we see great opportunity for designing the Qingpu Liantang Hotel in a way that meaningfully connects people with the vibrancy of the surrounding environment while celebrating the area’s natural beauty.”

The wider project includes a vehicular road, waterway bridges and pedestrian paths which animate the site, with the potential for expansion to include docks and boathouses for the use of residents. The hotel units are devised in an apartment style to appear as a village in this serene landscape.

10,000 sq m of commercial space has also been incorporated into the design with restaurants and retail facilities accessible via the road and waterway systems.
