Model Museum now available appointment-free at new home in Jersey City

The Richard Meier Model Museum has a new home. Previously located in Long Island City, New York and open only by appointment, the museum has taken up residency at the Mana Contemporary in Jersey City, New Jersey where it joins the Furniture Showroom of Ana Meier, the architect’s daughter.

Opened 12 January, the new museum is located on the art center’s 2nd floor. At 15,000 sq ft, it is five times larger than Meier’s model museum in Long Island City and houses a 150-plus model collection that spans the Meier's career, going back to the 1965 Smith House, one of the architect’s seminal projects, and including the study models of his legendary design for the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

Along with models, the space houses the architect’s personal studio and a research library. A gallery will rotate exhibitions of his art such as prints, sketches, renderings, photographs and sculpture. The research center will be open to students and practicing architects and will serve as an educational resource to emerging architects and designers.

“Richard Meier’s new space at Mana Contemporary will reveal his intricate design process to a wider audience,” said Eugene Lemay, Founder and Director of Mana Contemporary.  “We are honored to be the home of not only the museum but also a research institute for ongoing study."

Richard Meier recently celebrated the 50 anniversary of his practice.  He was born in nearby Newark, New Jersey.
