wHY Architecture is building a new art hall at this top US liberal arts college

wHY Architecture is designing a 36,000 sq ft studio art hall for US private, liberal arts college Pomona College, which ranked in second place on the America's Top Colleges list last year.

The proposed building, which is due for completion in October this year, will feature a central courtyard, room studios, and galleries for students to critique and display their works as well as socialise. The project expects to achieve a Gold rating from the USGBC's LEED certification program.

The $21 million new hall is designed to be the centre of life within the campus. Sitting on the campus edge, the building will allow passage from the Marston Quad to ‘The Wash', a 40-acre nature reserve. This porous nature of the building's elements, both inviting and open, allows the cross- pollination of ideas throughout the campus. Within the art ecosystem, there are very few divisions between disciplines, and students are encouraged to explore new ideas.

The building is arranged in a series of volumes, stacked atop each other and housing individual studios. Covering and bringing it all together, is an arching steel and wood roof that echoes the rise and fall of the nearby mountain range and draws parallels to the historic bow- string trussed warehouses that now house art galleries and studios throughout Los Angeles.

Pomona College was established as a coeducational institution in 1887. This project is a collaboration between Pomona's Office of Facilities and Campus Services, wHY, and Hamilton Construction.
