Work commences on CO-2 neutral 'Energyville' in Genk by Dutch architects AKT

Construction is underway on ‘Energyville’ by Atelier Kempe Thrill in Genk-Waterschei. The 15,000 sq m smart grid research laboratory and education centre is located on the campus of the Catholic University of Leuven and has been designed as the greenest building in Flanders.

The flexible structure was conceptualised using cradle to cradle principles and will be CO2 neutral upon completion. The laboratory and parking garage was won through a European tender with Atelier Kempe Thrill working alongside architecture office Osar Antwerp for the design.

The team is looking to achieve BREEAM Excellent for the design through guidance from sustainability advisor Paul van Bergen of DGMR.
