Victorian house in Wimbledon renovated and extended by Stephen Fletcher Architects

Stephen Fletcher Architects was commissioned in 2010 to extend and remodel this Victorian semi-detached property in Wimbledon Village, London. In a departure from many of the company's recently-completed projects, the clients were looking to build upon the Victorian heritage wherever possible and decorate the interiors in a 'shabby chic' style.

The front elevation of the property has been largely restored to its original condition, whilst lower ground floor level extensions have been constructed to the rear and the side; the former in matching London stock brickwork with 'Sky Frame' sliding French windows, and the latter discreetly located beneath the side passageway.

The ground floor has been opened-up as far as possible by combining the two original reception rooms, forming an enlarged opening to the Entrance Hall, and installing new French windows which open onto a terrace atop the rear extension. The Victorian heritage has been built-upon by installing new plaster cornices, painted timber architraves & window shutters, and a new limestone fireplace.

The first floor has largely been given-over to a master suite, formed by connecting two original bedrooms by new folding panelled doors. A log-burning stove has been installed in the original firebox, with exposed brickwork and a zinc bath on slate tiling beneath the window. Three bedrooms and a bathroom are located on the second floor, all featuring ceilings opened-up into the roof space.

The lower ground floor has witnessed the greatest transformation. A series of low-ceilinged poky rooms were knocked-together, excavated down by a couple of feet, and extended to the rear and side so as to form a single light and airy open-plan space. The kitchen is located at one end and is by Plain English.

Careful co-ordination was required, particularly regarding the section of semi-recessed appliances within a section of (Dinesen) douglas fir panelling which matches the floorboards. Discreet jib doors within this panelling access a utility room, study and wine cellar.

The centre of the space is occupied by a dining area, and a sitting area is located at the garden end. This features a 'media cabinet' formed of douglas fir boards, a set of vintage French shutters adapted to form doors to a children's playroom, a large skylight, and the aforementioned 'Sky Frame' sliding doors.

The gardens have been re-landscaped to Justin Greer's designs, including new terraces, steps and much-improved connections with the house. This was largely implemented by the principal contractor. The whole-house AV/Lutron lighting system is by Twisted Pear, and Rebecca Leivars was brought in towards the end of the construction stage to help the client source some of the loose furnishings and design the living room cabinetry.
