Shenzhen Airport Group so thrilled with design of Terminal 3 (opening today) they are taking steps to copyright the concept
Today (28 November 2013) is the first operational day of Terminal 3 at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport in Guangdong. Designed by Studio Fuksas with BIAD and Knippers Helbig Advanced Engineering, the 500,000 sq m volume increases the capacity of the airport by 58% and enables the facility to handle up to 45 million passengers each year.
Based on the concept of a manta ray, the airport centres on a 1.5km-long volume with numerous projections, all wrapped in a double skin with honeycomb motif. This design was such a success with the client (Shenzhen Airport Group Co.) that investigations are underway into copyrighting the concept to prevent any replica developments.
The 1.5km-long roof spans 80m with metal and glass panels in a honeycomb shape. This arrangement allows vast quantities of light to filter through the roof system, illuminating the interior volume and glinting off the stainless steel finishes within.
Knippers Helbig was responsible for the development of structural solutions for the reinforced concrete of the arrival and departure levels as well as for the static analysis of the steel structures of the roof and facade. Here, the diamond-shaped structure refers directly to the honeycomb shape of the facade and is stiffened additionally by cross members.
The spring-loaded bearing bolts of the steel structure permit uniform distribution of temperature and especially seismic loads on the supports, creating a unified impression of the structural elements up to 400 m long.
For Studio Fuksas, the overarching themes were ‘movement’ and ‘pause’, as the team considered walking distances, wayfinding, processing times, visibility of amenities and potential crowding issues. A forest of white ‘trees’ can be found within the interior volume and act as air conditioning vents to provide comfortable conditions for all travellers.
Studio Fuksas is also involved in two further stages of expansion at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, due to complete in 2025 and 2035.
