For those looking for a festive getaway, try Federico Rivera Rio's Hotel Escondido

Not everyone wants to stay home for the festive period and each year WAN provides a couple of alternative venues for you to enjoy the holiday season. Last year it was Peter Zumthor’s Timber Houses in Leis, this year it’s a relaxed and sunny retreat in the Mexican coastal town of Puerto Escondido.

This petite little port is a hive of activity for surfers and thrill seekers as it experiences some incredible waves, giving the village a relaxed and welcoming vibe. 16 beach huts are due to open along 200m of coastline on 1 December this year, designed by Federico Rivera Rio in collaboration with hoteliers Carlos Couturier and Moises Micha of Grupo Habita.

Each hut has its own private plunge pool and is decorated with rustic but chic accessories such as draped canvas hammocks. Authentic palapa rooftops (thatched with dried palm leaves) and tropical wooden floorboards are all sourced locally as is the cuisine on offer to all residents.

Situated 50m from the pure white sands of Zicatela Beach, the thatched huts allow residents to lounge in their own private retreat or nip back and forth from the waves as they partake in the many watersports on offer, including surfing, kayaking or sailing.

Design Hotels says of its latest offering: “Hotel Escondido offers a modern take on the traditional Oaxacan beach hut, cultivating a sophisticated atmosphere with a cheerful, centrally located bar and an underground dance club that quite literally lives up to its name. Long regarded as a top ten surfing destination, the charismatic town welcomes the new rustic glamour that complements the area’s laid-back beachside vibe.
