BDP completes pair of dynamic public buildings in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province

In 2011, international multidisciplinary practice BDP opened its first office in Shanghai, and is now enjoying the completion of its first Chinese building projects. Two of the firm’s most expressive projects can be found in the burgeoning city of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province which is one of the most affluent major cities in the country.

Set on the edge of expansive parkland in the Science and Technology Smart City, BDP’s 8,000 sq m Suzhou Planning and Exhibition Hall is a pair of recently-completed opposing volumes. One portion of the complex takes an angular form with a green roof and large expanse of glass for natural daylighting. These design elements also enable full enjoyment of the surrounding landscape.

The second volume is a cylindrical form with a dynamic glass façade. Coating the exterior of the building is a plethora of sun shading devices which protect the interior spaces from harsh sunlight while creating a pleasing pattern when the Planning and Exhibition Hall is lit from within at night.

Internally the complex includes a 1,000 sq m model of the new Science and Technology Smart City, a 3D viewing gallery, interactive displays, conference facilities and multi-purpose exhibition halls, providing a range of opportunities for visitors to learn about the new district in active ways.

Another BDP project that has recently completed is the Suzhou Tourist Centre which will be celebrated with an official opening ceremony in the next few months. Set on the shores of Taihu Lake, the design of the Tourist Centre was inspired by the motion of the large black dragonflies that can often be found in the local area.

Combining banqueting facilities, exhibition space, a centre for local design products, conference facilities for up to 6,000 people, three restaurants, a VIP club and a tourism centre, the complex is a comprehensive information centre for the local area. Also included in the design is a new public space with views over the lake.
