Completely unsustainable, and a waste of our world's energy. It would be interesting to publish the information on the methods they are using to power this facility and if any renewable methods.

Mammoth indoor skiing centre unveiled by Patel Architecture for Wanda Group in Harbin

Beijing-based architecture studio Patel Architecture has shared its latest scheme with WAN - an indoor ski centre in Harbin for the Chinese developer Wanda Group. The scheme captures the vibrancy of this rapidly growing area, with Harbin being awarded 'City of Music' status by UNESCO in 2010.

Already approved and due to begin construction within a year, the design of the Harbin Indoor Ski Resort was inspired by the fluid movement of skiers in motion, with smooth yet controlled lines and soft contouring. Patel Architecture has also recognised the history and culture of Harbin in the design, using this as a base from which to develop a complex that reflects the expressive nature of this artistic city.

This large-scale development will be able to host up to 1,500 individuals on the indoor slopes at any one time, with high, medium and low intensity slopes for a variety of skiers. There will also be an indoor ice-skating rink of competition standard, a shopping mall, performing arts venues, cinemas, restaurants and associated commercial facilities.

Harbin is well-known for its cultural activities in the winter, hosting an annual celebration of ice sculptures. The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival begins in the New Year and typically lasts for one month, during which time intricate ice sculptures can be discovered throughout the city and in two designated exhibition zones in the evenings: Sun Island and Ice & Snow World.
