Expansive exhibitions centre in Strasbourg won by Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes

The Strasbourg Parc des Expositions PEX is a new major exhibition centre near the French/German border designed by competition winners Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes. A strong emphasis has been placed on connecting the different spaces with a landscape 'canvas'.

The project preserves this landscape and urban quality, providing soft links and gateways above the streets. The site is defined by lush vegetation, a canal and tramway, all of which have been enveloped into the design in a dynamic fashion.

As a large plateau along the bank of the canal, the PEX unfolds along the existing avenues. A series of exhibition spaces run along the side of the canal and can be opened during special events to form an external amphitheatre. Halls 2 and 3 are continuous while Hall 4 runs parallel to street, shaping the urban façade. As a result, a stroll though the exhibition spaces becomes a wander along the canal.

The integration of natural light plays a large part in this winning concept, with Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes observing the existing urban environment and structuring their design to draw in this natural daylight.

The halls are lit by large expanses of glass which allow the infiltration of sunlight while enabling views out over the landscape. A band of vegetation surrounds the building volumes, filtering this light and stitching the project into the site.

A panoramic rooftop restaurant is accessible from the reception area and offers 360-degree views of Strasbourg, adding a further element to this multifaceted exhibition venue. An open courtyard has also been included along Avenue Herrenschmidt.
