WAN AWARDS 2013 Residential Winners revealed at World Architecture Day in NY

The WAN AWARDS Residential Sector prize for 2013 set a frenetic pace as the winners were to be announced at this year’s World Architecture Day in New York City. Despite strong competition from wonderful entries from around the world the judging panel managed to agree on two clear winners.

The judging panel consisted of Michel Bertreux, Founder of TETRARC; David Bickle, Partner of Hawkins\Brown; Ted Cullinan, Founder of Cullinan Studio; P.K. Das, Founder of P.K. Das & Associates; Kenneth Drucker, Senior Principal & Design Director of HOK; Christoph Ingenhoven, Founder of Ingenhoven Architects; Christina Seilern, Founder of Studio Seilern Architects; and Peter Murray, Chairman of NLA - London’s Centre for Built Environment.

Leading the way in the 'Completed Schemes' category was Neue Hamburger Terrassen by LAN Architecture, a housing scheme regenerating a formal industrial area south of the Elbe in Hamburg, Germany. This scheme impressed the judges through the coming together of 33 families to determine the space they were to live in, working with the architects to create a community.

It even has its own blog and Twitter feed to enhance the feeling of social inclusion, the logic being that by being a part of the planning and design processes, a community was allowed to acquaint itself and work together toward a shared goal before they had even moved a removals box into a building. LAN Architecture created what they regarded as a ‘working class typology’ in its simple terraced housing, with communal spaces such as cultivated gardens.

David Bickle stated: "It’s a great idea. It’s an idea that should be adopted and investigated more about people coming together to shape and mould their own environment." Christina Seilern noted how difficult it must have been difficult to coordinate so many stakeholder interests which was commendable in itself.

The winner of the 'Future Schemes' category was the Icon Residence, Mont’ Kiara in Kuala Lumpur by International Design Studio Pte Ltd which was conceived to emulate the romance and fantasies of renowned waterfront resorts and towns in the Mediterranean. The judges found the design arresting from the start with a pleasing ad-hoc feel, very accomplished for the size of the development.

Christina Seilern noted that the architects 'managed to make a very large building very small scale which I think is great’. Peter Murray thought it had ‘nice internal spaces’. Ted Cullinan liked the use of gardens throughout the development and all agreed that it had a very interesting ‘1960s’ feel and acknowledged that to achieve something as complex as their design is not easy.

We would like to offer our heartiest congratulations to LAN Architecture and International Design Studio Pte Ltd in what was a wonderful competition with an incredibly diverse shortlist, all with different methodologies and challenges. Home is where the heart is, but what that actually constitutes will always provoke a stimulating debate.
