Death sparks period of instability
On Sunday 5th February 2006, Viktor Melnikov died at the age of 91, leaving the house built by his father, the great architect Konstantin Melnikov, to the Russian state, as well as his archive. Viktor had safe-guarded the house ever since his father died in 1974.
The extraordinary building, that has become the icon of the Russian Avant Garde, was one of few private houses to be built under Communism. It has monument status and is also on the World Monuments Fund Watch List 2006. As all those who visited the house know, Viktor Melnikov was a tireless carrier of his father’s vision. His death marks a new period of instability for the house as family disputes threaten to mar its future.
