JUST WHY WOULD ANYONE DESIGN SOMETHING LIKE THIS. ARE THE FLOORS CURVED ?
I REMEMBER LOU KAHN TELLING ME, WHEN I WAS A STUDENT, THAT " DIFFERENCE FOR THE SAKE OF DIFFERENCE IS NOT A PROPER OBJECTIVE IN THE PRACTICE OF ARCHITECTURE ! "

Gently curved silhouette of National Library of Sejong City completes in South Korea

Samoo's National Library of Sejong City is a landmark facility planned specifically for the Multifunctional Administrative City of Korea, also known as Sejong City. Designed from the motif of a book page being turned over, a simple geometry of a gently curved paper forms the basis of the design and creates a unique outline that is easily recognisable as one of the landmark buildings of the city.

As one of the strategies in designing the building, the library was also planned to become an Emotional Library, a place where analogue and digital formats converge for the convenience of the users. Inside the library, an expansive open space with a splendid view of the lake provides an ultimate atmosphere for library users while a central pedestrian plaza forms an open space welcoming visitors inside the building.

Planned for opening at the end of 2013, the library will become a fundamental infrastructure to the city. The project was designed by Samoo Architects & Engineers in collaboration with Keun Jeong Architects & Engineers Inc. Spread over 21,076 sq ft, the library includes 4 storeys above ground and two basement floors.
