World's first inflatable concert hall welcomes visitors to Lucerne Festival Ark Nova, Japan

An inflatable concert hall has ballooned in Matsushima City, Japan in preparation for the Lucerne Festival Ark Nova, a local music event (Ark Nova) with the support of the European music event Lucerne Festival. The artist behind this deep purple mass could only be Anish Kapoor. His courageous, ethereal and ambitious works have graced public spaces from Chicago to Paris and London to Bilbao, this year leading him to partner with Japanese architect Arata Isozaki on the world’s first inflatable concert hall.

The Lucerne Festival Ark Nova will be hosted in Miyagi Prefecture from 27 September until the beginning of October before the inflatable event structure is deflated and packed up. It will then tour a series of towns affected by the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami, hosting traditional Japanese performances, workshops and orchestral concerts for the enjoyment of the public. In total the structure can hold about 700 people with photographs released by the Lucerne Festival Ark Nova showing rows of cedar-wood benches bathed in purplish-red hues as light filters in through the expanded façade.

A statement from the festival organisers reads: “Lucerne Festival Ark Nova is the first of its kind in Asia and in preparation for this event a mobile concert hall made of a balloon-like-material was developed. Through the cooperation of Arata Isozaki, a world renowned architect and Anish Kapoor, a British sculptor born in India, this music hall Ark Nova was created. Here we will hold a great music festival that will raise the spirits of the people of the area together with the leading musicians and artists from around the world.”
