PTEa creates multiplex cinema, 18,000 sq ft retail and leisure space plus 121 homes
Walthamstow Town Centre in London, UK is to be transformed by a major redevelopment scheme. This mixed-use development, designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards architects (PTEa), was awarded planning permission with a unanimous vote on behalf of clients Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association and Hill Residential.
The scheme is now on site and under construction with completion due in Spring/Summer 2015. The re-development of the Arcade Site in Walthamstow includes a multiplex cinema, 18,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space and 121 mixed-tenure residential units.
Of the 121 flats and houses, 50 will be affordable or shared ownership and the remainder will be privately owned. The flats and houses will be raised above street level, sitting atop the public amenities and overlooking a communal garden at the rear.
The design follows the principles outlined for the masterplan of Walthamstow Town Centre. The site of the development is on the corner of Hoe Street and Walthamstow High Street, the home of Europe’s longest outdoor street market. The development will bring new life to the existing community, encourage economic growth and investment in the area and create many new employment opportunities.
Pollard Thomas Edwards architects’ design was the winning entry of a competition run by the London Borough of Waltham Forest for the Walthamstow Town Centre Arcade site and responds to a council developed brief.
