BIG+MVVA's 6,000 sq ft raised pavilion and platform unveiled for Brooklyn Bridge Park

A graceful ‘mantaray’ is destined to swoop into Brooklyn Bridge Park in the near future following the recent release of plans by Bjarke Ingels Group and MVVA. The team was selected for the design of Pier 6 at Brooklyn Bridge Park in early 2013 and has just released these renderings of their concept for the site, showing a single smooth movement which creates both sheltered pavilion space and a raised viewing platform.

President of Brooklyn Bridge Park Regina Myer said: “This spectacular structure will provide much-needed shade and a unique space for public events, while offering a dramatic ascent to the water’s edge. We are so pleased with the collaboration between Michael Van Valkenburgh’s landscape design for the southern portion of the park, and Bjarke Ingels’ design for a breathtaking architectural addition that provides a truly special moment on the waterfront.”

The design for Pier 6 sees a triangular cross-laminated timber structure rising to a height of 17.5ft so that visitors can enjoy far-reaching views across the waterfront towards the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. In the shadow of this raised gesture is a sheltered space with a field of supporting thin steel columns.

Illuminated with subtle up-lighting and animated with movable site furniture, this area will host small performances, impromptu gatherings and social events, with refreshments provided by food carts and picnic areas. There are also plans for a colourful flower field and treed areas to bring the surroundings to life.

Bjarke Ingels details: “The Mantaray is a small public platform at the end of the pier - equally accessible above and below. Its namesake organic slopes and curves have been shaped by concerns for accessibility, safety, shelter, structure - like a manmade reef evolved to accommodate human life.”
