J. Mayer H. Architects does Hasselt justice with hazelnut tree-inspired development

Designed by J. Mayer H, Architects with a20-architecten and Lensºass architecten, the Court of Justice in Hasselt, Belgium opens its doors today. The 28,000 sq m facility began construction in 2008 following a competition win in 2005 and combines courtrooms, a library for university students, auditoriums and a 64m-high office tower.

The neutrally-toned development is part of a wider redevelopment masterplan for the former railway station site by West 8 which includes an abundance of public spaces from buildings to parks, mixed with commercial ventures such as offices and hospitality outlets.

Externally the Court of Justice was completed in 2011 with the interiors fully fitted out earlier this year. Today (13 September) the doors will be flung open to the public who will be able to enjoy panoramic views from a restaurant 64m into the sky.

The façade references the image of a tree in light of the hazelnut trees in the City of Hasselt’s coat of arms, snaking across the exterior in an angular pattern. A mesh framework which envelopes a large proportion of the façade is reminiscent of a delicate leaf skeleton, an image which is also featured within the interior spaces.

20,763 sq m of the usable space can be found above ground, including the offices, meeting rooms, library, reception, cafeteria and court rooms, with a 4,692 sq m archive and 3,384 sq m parking lot located below ground.
