SPASM DESIGN Architects create 'Liquid Stone' residence in lofty Khopoli highlands
Perched in the western highlands of Khopoli, Maharashtra is a fortress-like home by SPASM DESIGN Architects. The 638 sq m residence, entitled The House Cast in Liquid Stone, is a direct response to the local climate high up in the picturesque hills, frequently doused in heavy rainfall and blasted by heat during the summer months.
As a result the architects have used water, sand, cement and granular basalt to create a material for a powerful home which protects its inhabitants from the harsh elements yet retains a level of elegance and beauty. The result is a stunning display of architectural ingenuity and flair, framing magnificent views across the landscape for quiet contemplation or entertainment.
The design team furthers: “The house was conceived as a cast for human occupation, a refuge which trapped the views, the sun, the rain, the air, and became one with the cliff edge it stood on. Akin to the growth of a coral, the substance of the walls and roof dictate the experience of inhabiting the site.”
The project’s name - The House Cast in Liquid Stone - implies fluid lines and sinuous curves but this is not this case with SPASM DESIGN Architects’ concept. In opposition, sharp angles and clean strokes characterise the property, the main reference to the ‘liquid’ form being the high gloss shine of some of the construction materials when drenched in monsoon rain.
A raw, grey finish to the exterior is starkly contrasted within by punches of colour in bright oranges and reds, occasionally extending into the open air spaces with spool-like chairs. A dining area benefits from being open to the elements via two of its four walls, one of which opens out onto a courtyard accessed by stairs which lead to the roof terrace.
A pool at the far end of the terrace offers a release to the inhabitants as they pass the stacked stones to the lower bedroom. Trees are used to create inside-outside areas such as the bathroom and partly covered terrace and provide a shot of green.
