AA Visiting School enables architecture students to leave their mark in Oregon forest

Marking the Forest is an Architectural Association visiting school set in a managed forest in central Oregon, USA. The intension of the ten-day course is to engage the students with the forest through architectural practice to design and build a structure using timber from the forest in which the program is set.

The course is spread over five years from 2012 to 2017 and this is the second structure to be constructed as part of the initiative. Last year the final project was entitled The Oculus. This year it is The Amplifier (see left).

The design is intended to explore, enhance, refocus or concentrate the viewers mind toward an aspect of the forest that may not be initially apparent by using spatial means to create a built form.

The AA visiting school in Eugene, Oregon is directed by Kristin Cross (Director Satellite Architects, London) and Stewart Dodd (AA Unit Master and Director Satellite Architects, London) together with Jason Griffiths (Arizona State University) and Scrap Marshall (UCLA and former AA student).

The course is a collaboration between the AA, the University of Oregon School of Architecture and the Bauman Family Tree Farm, a 700-acre educational trust near Veneta, Oregon.
