Coop Himmelb(l)au secures Dawang Mountain Resort contest with dramatic entry

A disused quarry near Changsha is to be reinvigorated by an entertainment development with associated hotel tower following a design competition won by Vienna-based Coop Himmelb(l)au. At a depth of 60m at its lowest point, the Chinese quarry was once a thriving pit but will soon be transformed into a glittering leisure and entertainment facility.

Measuring 150,000 sq m, the site’s raw beauty will be harnessed by Coop Himmelb(l)au in a varied development which will include an Entertainment Ice World complete with indoor ski slope, shopping and restaurant facilities, and a 60,000 sq m 5-star hotel tower. The competition-winning concept also incorporates a Water Park with a cantilevered outdoor swimming pool complete with 60m high waterfall which cascades downwards into the depths of the pit.

The centrepiece of the scheme is a bulbous glass form which arches over the pit, revealing the current topography of the site. Spanning 170m between two opposing cliff faces, the bulk of the Snow and Ice World creates a sheltered space beneath which will lie a sunken garden with islands, water features and cliffside pathways.

Glass is used in great volumes across the design for ‘interactive visual contact’. Coop Himmelb(l)au has included vast quantities of the transparent material so that visitors within the buildings can enjoy the raw external spaces while those outside can gaze inwards to the various entertainment options within.

Standing to the south of the main complex will be a 100m-high luxury hotel tower with access to the Entertainment Ice World provided by a Grand Garden Plaza. With dramatic views afforded by the prime location of the hospitality building and a smooth curving design, the architects have referred to the hotel as ‘the most significant iconic landmark for the entire Dawang Mountain Tourism Resort Center’.

In total the 60,000 sq m hotel will include: 270 single and double bed suites; 60 executive suites; an executive lounge; a 6-room presidential suite; bar and restaurant facilities; various conference amenities; and fitness, spa and beauty facilities.
