ECO WAN

Ecorium at the National Ecological Institute in Seocheon completed by Samoo

Located in Seocheon, Republic of Korea, the Ecoplex ecological park is a government-led initiative to preserve the natural environment of the region and to create a national hub to gather various ecological valuables for advanced research and exhibition in Korea. Within the Ecoplex lies the Ecorium, a purpose-built exhibition facility.

Designed by Samoo Architects & Engineers in collaboration with Grimshaw Architects, the Ecorium is composed of various greenhouses and controlled environments in order to reproduce the global ecosystem of five different climatic zones ranging from the tropical to the polar regions.

Designed with the concept of ‘Nature’s Odyssey’, the individual climate zones are grouped by a linear podium which also functions as the main exhibition circulation path providing various experiences to visitors.

As a green landmark building, the facility will provide visitors with realistic experience of the various ecosystems around the world and provide a new hub for education as well as advanced ecological researches.

With the application of various sustainable technologies including alignment/orientation and airflow simulations of buildings to minimise energy consumptions and carbon footprint, the facility will also provide a new benchmark for eco-friendly exhibition facilities.

Currently opened to limited attendants, the Ecorium within the Ecoplex is scheduled for official opening in the beginning of 2014.
