This is my favourite airport enroute NZ to Europe. There is a swimming pool, a food hall with ordinary local food and comfortable couches on which to read or nap. My heart sinks when I read this. Another anonymous, international shopping mall, with gardens that can be looked at from some hard bright marbled walkway will no doubt appear. Why will this encourage me to stop over in Singapore?

Safdie Associates, Benoy and RSP secure Changi Airport Project Jewel scheme

A team devised of Safdie Architects, Benoy and local firm RSP has been commissioned to design a mixed-use complex at Changi Airport in Singapore to encourage transiting passengers to lengthen their stay in the country. Approximately 30% of the passenger traffic at Changi Airport is transiting and it is the intention of the recently unveiled Project Jewel to enhance tourism in Singapore.

Lee Seow Hiang, CEO of Changi Airport Group (CAG) furthers: “To strengthen Changi Airport’s competitive advantage and ensure that we continue to capture passenger mindshare and traffic, we must take deliberate steps to enhance Changi’s attractiveness as a stopover point. With Project Jewel, we are pleased to be developing an exciting product that will swing travellers to choose Changi Airport, and Singapore.”

As part of this initiative, CAG is working in partnership with CapitaMalls Asia. As one of the main retail development companies in Asia, CapitaMalls Asia has a wide portfolio of projects including Raffles City and Junction 8, both in Singapore. Talks are ongoing about a joint venture between CapitaMalls Asia and CAG to develop and manage Project Jewel with a decision expected before the end of 2013.

Project Jewel is due to be constructed in the current site of the Changi Airport Terminal 1 car park and a multi-storey basement car park will be created to account for this loss of active space. The 3.5 hectare plot will then be transformed into a retail and leisure facility with aviation and travel-related amenities encased in a glass and steel façade. Renderings show a luscious garden under a glass dome with a gushing waterfall and multi-level shopping facilities.

Hiang continued: “We are very excited about this opportunity to create at Changi Airport an iconic global attraction that will capture the hearts of both tourists and Singaporeans. For tourists, we envisage Project Jewel to be a must-visit Singapore attraction, located strategically at the doorstep of one of the world’s busiest air hubs, and an extension of the Changi brand promise that many travellers worldwide have come to know us for.  For Singaporeans, it will be an exciting world-class destination right here at home, where they can relax and enjoy with their loved ones, again and again."
