Biggest single intervention to rail network in Abbey Wood area since 1849 in planning

Designs for a new station at Abbey Wood in south east London have been submitted to the London Borough of Bexley and the Royal Borough of Greenwich this week. Crossrail and Fereday Pollard Architects presented the plans which, if approved, will result in the single largest addition to the local rail network since 1849.

The plans involve the demolition of the existing station (a temporary volume will be built during the construction of the permanent amenities) and the creation of a two-level station built above two new tracks. A spacious concourse is also in the plans, leading on to a wide forecourt with two new ‘island’ platforms and six lifts for ease of use for all passengers.

Andrew Wolstenholme, Crossrail Chief Executive said: “Crossrail will help to transform the local area, dramatically improving transport links, reducing congestion on existing rail services, providing a boost to the local economy and supporting wider regeneration in southeast London.”

These plans have been initiated to provide for a growing number of passengers using the station at Abbey Wood, a figure set to treble over the next 15 years. It is hoped that a major intervention such as this will ease congestion for commuters with the journey time between Abbey Wood and both Canary Wharf and Bond Street reduced by approximately 20 minutes and the journey to Heathrow shortened by approximately 40 minutes.
