Foster + Partners' SSE Hydro Arena to open on time this September despite recent fire

A fire at the Foster + Partners-designed Hydro Arena in Glasgow will not delay the building’s opening this September it has been confirmed. The scheme is due to open this coming September with a performance from Rod Stewart. The cause of the blaze in early June has not yet been confirmed and no casualties have been reported.

The SSE Hydro Arena will join the Clyde Auditorium (affectionately dubbed ‘The Armadillo’) on the River Clyde, a popular venue also designed by Foster + Partners. The new arena will seat 12,500 spectators and includes a flexible mix of seating including fixed, retractable and removable chairs in order for a range of staging and concert layouts, as well as various sporting events.

Spanning 120m, the shallow dome of the diagonally latticed steelwork roof is 45m above ground level at its highest point and follows a rise in seating to the front of the building giving an angled profile. Translucent material sheathes the top section of the arena’s façade, onto which patterns and images can be projected during the evening. Visitors will enter through a public square sandwiched between the two Foster + Partners-designed buildings through a top-lit lobby.

A statement from the architects reads: “Foster + Partners is delighted to be working with SECC again, following the successful collaboration on the Clyde Auditorium. The Hydro Arena will be an exciting new landmark for a great city and a world-class performance venue for Scotland. Its design strengthens connections to the River Clyde and will be central to the Queen's Dock redevelopment - its series of new public spaces will bring the riverfront to life and open it up for all to enjoy.”
